About The YB3i

The YB3i Tracker is a truly global tracking device designed for permanent use aboard marine vessels and land vehicles.

It is designed for permanent installation on ships, yachts, vehicles and other assets. The unit is waterproof, ruggedised, with a variety of mounting options to suit your needs (mounting options can be purchased in the shop).

The tracker will wake up on a regular basis, obtain a position using the GPS satellite network, and then transmit that position back to YB HQ using either the Iridium satellite network or GSM/GPRS (with GSM add-on). We visualize the positions on an easy-to-use web-based map for individuals (YBlog), or our fully featured fleet management system (The Core) for fleets of devices.

The YB3i also allows short messages (like SMS, social media updates and short emails) to be sent using a paired Bluetooth device (such as a smartphone) and the Messenger app. This allows for full two-way communication wherever you are, even when out of mobile network range.

The combination of GSM and Iridium provides a cost effective, and truly global, method of tracking and communicating with your assets wherever they may be.

About Iridium

Iridium is the only satellite network that allows transmission of information from any point on Earth - other networks have no coverage in the polar regions, and have intermittent or no coverage in other marine and land areas.

Iridium has 66 satellites in orbit around the Earth, allowing coverage anywhere on Earth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No other satellite network has truly global coverage. Messages sent via Iridium take just seconds to reach you, via e-mail or directly to your web-service.

How does it work?

YB3i uses the Iridium Satellite network. Specifically, it uses an Iridium service called 'Short Burst Data' (SBD). There's some official info here.
At the heart of YB3i is an Iridium 9602 modem.

How can I mount the YB3i

The YB3i can be mounted in a variety of ways. The simplest way is to purchase our optional Rokk Mount (available in the shop), which allows the unit to be easily mounted to a rail or pole. The unit can also be stuck down flat, in ceiling voids for example, using high-strength velcro on the flat base. Lastly, it has a set of 4 recessed M5 bolt holes on the base. You can use these to secure the unit using your own mounting solution, by bolting through a plate or hull.
